Everything in the grocery stores seems so virtuous, and it’s downright confusing to choose the right foods for fat loss. Potato chips are gluten-free, and the bacon is free-range; there is green tea in the frozen yogurt, and cereal has switched to whole grain. Wow, the glare from all that pseudo-health talk can be blinding.

It seems the food industry will do anything to convince the public their product is healthy. Adding insult to injury, the food industry is well aware of the outcome of processed foods, yet they also know the bottom line is profit. The products must appeal to us in such a way that it drives us back for more; and that’s exactly why quick convenient processed foods are developed.

Guess what? We have the upper hand. Scientist let the cat out the bag years ago about food choices, but many of us have this pre-conceived notion about healthy nutritious foods. Leading a healthy lifestyle that is devoid of processed sugary treats does not mean you are now limited to a menu of flavorless bland foods. It only means substituting one option for another – a healthier option.

Would you believe a simple change in dietary habits can produce instant weight loss? The quickest way to drop extra pounds is to introduce fruits and vegetables into your daily menu.

     Everyone should try to eat a minimum of 5 servings of fruits and vegetables a day. You’d be surprised to find vegetables in many dishes; soups, salads and side dishes. If you select a dessert, why not get one with fruit? Fruit juices and smoothies contribute to the count of daily servings of fruits and vegetables so enjoy a refreshing drink.

     Lean red meat, such as beef or lamb is s good source of iron, as well as duck. However, many of these meats are often high in fat, so when possible choose grilled or roasted meat. Today, we can choose pretty much any lean meat including chicken and turkey that are naturally low in fat

     Fish is a great choice. You can switch among the blue fish, salmon, sardines, tuna and mackerel, which are all rich in omega3 fatty acids. The ideal cooking method is on the grill or in the oven

     Cancel out the bread, white rice, pasta and potatoes because these foods are higher up on the GI index, which have an effect on your insulin, and will only leave you hungry later. Always choose brown rice or whole sweet potatoes, or boiled potatoes rather than anything fried or smothered. If you must, choose tomato sauces in place of those based on creams

     Dairy products, such as cheese or yogurt, are highly nutritious but it is best to consume them in moderation. For example, use grated cheese as a garnish rather than piling the cheese on top of your main course, or eat only one boiled egg or opt for egg whites.

Clearly we can’t turn back the clock to a time with less processed foods, but by choosing the right foods for fat loss, we can take hold of our weight issues and lead a healthier life.
